Luminex Now Offers Support for the Macintosh Hierarchical File System (HFS) with CD-ROM Storage Solutions
Riverside, CA - January 30, 1997 - Luminex now offers HFS CD-ROM support for all Macintosh clients that want to take full advantage of the file system while using a UNIX server. CD-ROMs created natively on a Macintosh with the HFS format can now be accessed using the Luminex
Fire Series software by virtually any type of network client. Luminex is the first company to offer HFS CD-ROM networking support on a broad range of UNIX platforms. Now HFS CD-ROM discs can be read by UNIX servers and the networked Macintosh clients can access the resource and finder information, allowing them to view the thumbnail picture icons that have become standard in many applications and industries.
The use of the Luminex Fire Series MultiNet software, or other AppleTalk protocol implementations, allow UNIX servers to support networked Macintosh clients. CD-ROM discs in networked CD-ROM libraries now show up on the Macintosh desktop with the proper data and resource forks just as any local CD-ROM, providing the valuable thumbnail picture information that was previously unavailable.
With the release of the their HFS support, Luminex has effectively addressed the needs of its Macintosh users. There are many Macintosh users that need to use HFS CD-ROM discs in a multi-platform network environment. While explaining the value of HFS development, Art Tolsma, Director of Business Development at Luminex said that "many companies involved in using and creating CD-ROM discs take advantage of UNIX servers for data networking and Macintosh clients for creating and accessing the CD-ROMs. Now, through the unique development capabilities at Luminex, they can create competitive advantages by expanding their uses of CD-ROM technology in their existing environment."
Many network environments have a need for Macintosh HFS support. Offices using Macintosh workstations, such as an office with internal desktop publishing can immediately put Luminex's HFS support to use. There is no longer a need to have an entirely separate CD-ROM and file server for Macintosh clients. Now any existing UNIX based server can act as a native HFS CD-ROM and file server to the Macintosh clients.
The Fire Series HFS support is immediately available for a wide variety of Luminex Fire Series CD-ROM libraries and towers. Supported UNIX server platforms include those from Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics , Hewlett Packard, IBM, and Apple.
Luminex was founded in April 1994 with a dedicated focus on developing and marketing high performance CD-ROM solutions. They are UNIX and multi-user product development experts, and have extensive background in the expanding market of CD-ROM based technology. The Fire Series has been installed in over a dozen countries worldwide including several of the world's largest mission-critical, multi-terabyte CD-ROM databases.
