Session #21488

Monday, August 7
11:15 AM - 12:15 PM
Location: OMNI Providence
Room: Washington

Rethinking the Role of "Data" in the Modern Data Center

We seldom think about data's potential beyond it's original creation. Yet, growing demands for access to that data requires more consideration and stewardship by forward-thinking mainframe professionals. Important questions such as where do you want your data? When do you want it there? What do you want to do with it? And, most importantly, why?

This session discusses the broader role that mainframe tape is filling for data in modern data centers. Topics include data synchronicity and distribution, the many use cases for cloud services, as well as data sharing and integration across the enterprise.

Getting Your z/OS Data to the Cloud - Panel Discussion

There are many ways to get your z/OS data into the Cloud. This panel discussion will allow 4 different hardware vendors (IBM, Oracle Storage Tek, Dell EMC, and HDS/Luminex) to each give a short overview of their current offering(s) to move, copy or place z/OS data into the Cloud. At the end, there will also be time for Q&A. This will be a great chance to hear an overview of the various ways storage providers are opening up the Cloud for z/OS data.

2017 State of Enterprise-wide Data Sharing Survey: Results, Priorities and Solutions

Luminex will share the results of this survey, conducted by Enterprise Systems Media. These results provide insight into how organizations are addressing the growing need to integrate their mainframe data with a myriad of systems across the enterprise, the challenges they face and how they are improving these processes.

Mainframe security subject matter expert, Mark Wilson of RSM Partners, will share insight on mainframe data sharing from a security perspective. Also, attendees will hear an end user’s experience implementing next-generation mainframe data sharing and transfer technologies.

This session is a "must-attend" for anyone involved in exchanging data between mainframe and distributed systems, mainframe systems management or mainframe security.

Speakers:

  • Colleen Gordon, Luminex Software
  • Mark Wilson, RSM Partners
  • Cathy Taddei, Infrastructure Systems Engineer

Off-Host Processing: A Practical Approach

Off-hosting critical mainframe applications that process huge volumes of data continues to be an intriguing opportunity to reduce monthly MLC charges but presents a variety of issues difficult to overcome. Available solutions continue to rely on TCP/IP to move the data; a slow and costly process in terms of system overhead.

Attend this Luminex session to learn how a FICON-based approach offers a wide variety of off-hosting opportunities with cross-platform, bi-directional communication over the same I/O channels as your mainframe DASD and tape subsystems. Examples of off-hosting opportunities include SAS language processing, SMF record processing, integration with computing grids, as well as providing mainframe data for analytics using solutions such as Hadoop, Spark, and Azure.

Attendees will also hear an end user’s experience integrating mainframe data with an off-host, cloud-based analytics environment.

Better Alternatives to Mainframe File Transfer Protocol

FTP and SFTP are typical mechanisms used in mainframe environments to transfer mainframe data both internally to open systems platforms and externally to business partners and clients. If you are new to file transfer or have been using unsecured FTP, moving to SFTP can be an experience in trial and error. The speakers share their experiences moving from FTP to SFTP, what they learned along the way, and the discovery of several faster, easier to use and more secure alternatives. This session includes the speakers' experiences with Managed File Transfer solutions including: Connect:Direct, WMQFTE and SecureTransfer.

Speakers:

  • Colleen Gordon, Luminex Software
  • Joe Polizzi, Managed File Transfer Expert
  • Cathy Taddei, Infrastructure Systems Engineer

Making Practical Use of "The Cloud" for z/OS Data

Mainframe data is arguably the most valuable data in the enterprise. Pioneering mainframe professionals continue to seek "best fit" approaches to protecting and leveraging that data, leading many to take advantage of their existing corporate Cloud storage/computing resources to gain a competitive advantage for their organization.

This session expands on the "Getting z/OS Data to the Cloud” Panel Discussion, because getting data to the cloud isn't the whole story. Why would you want to do it? Which duties are best served by the mainframe and which are best served by the cloud? This discussion will address those questions and others. Real and practical use case examples will also be presented, as well as options for securely, simply and cost-effectively incorporating Cloud resources as an integral part your mainframe operations.
